Guide to Changing your Start Orb/Button

ALWAYS CREATE A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT WHEN MODIFYING SYSTEM FILES

Step 1.

Download the Take Ownership (http://www.sevenforums.com/attachments/tutorials/28609d1253371523-take-ownership-shortcut-take_ownership.zip) context menu shortcut then unzip it and right on the reg file and select merge.

Step 2.

Navigate to c:\ and Take Ownership of the Windows Folder.

Step 3.

Download and install Restorator 2007 (http://www.bome.com/Restorator/download.html)

Step 4.

Now run Restorator 2007 and open explorer in c:\Windows

http://i45.tinypic.com/1t1pnr.jpg

Step 5.

Have your new Start Orb/Button ready on the desktop ready to use.

Step 6.

In the left pane in Restorator you will see a folder called Bitmap, expand that folder and you will see a bunch of numbers and each of those numbers represents a Start orb that if clicked on will show you a preview in the Right pane, the main images you need to worry about are 6801, 6805 and 6809.

If you are using a larger dpi then the Default Windows dpi then you will have to change the larger start orbs to match your dpi.

Step 7.

Now simply left click and hold on the new Start Orb/Button on your Desktop and drag it onto the relevant numbers in the left pane in Restorator and they will automatically be replaced with your new Start Orb/button.

Step 8.

Right Click on your taskbar and select Start Task Manager and in the processes tab select explorer and then select end process.

Step 9.

Now back in Restorator hit the save button and it will save your new Start Orb/Button and it will create a backup of explorer.exe called explorer backup.exe which you can restore back to default latter if you need to.

Step 10.

Go back to Task Manager and in the menu select New Task (Run...) and type c:\windows\explorer.exe and hit enter, then close Task Manager and Restorator and your done.

Hey Grim do you know where a guide is on how to make start orbs or convert vista orbs into win7 orbs?

First resize your Vista Orb because they are larger and then make your canvas size the same as the Windows 7 orbs then add a black background and add the alpha channel as well if needed and save as a 32 Bit Bitmap.

You either didn't take ownership of explorer.exe or you didn't kill explorer.exe in task manager before you saved.

Have you got a link to an official site verifying that this is an official Build?

Im not having a go or anything but when i saw your version and build date of Restorator_2009_4.0_build_1807 I went to Google and got http://www.google.com.au/#hl=en&q=restorator+2009&meta=&aq=f&oq=restorator+2009&fp=7926d529b7b46833 it just comes up with all share sites like rapidshare and nothing even related to Bome.

I thought this http://www.bome.com/Restorator/ was the official site for Restorator but they got nothing about a 2009 build they still got 2007 in the downloads section.

As i said Im not having a go or anything just I like to keep up to date on all my software but now confused. :nervs:

Cheers for getting back to me and for checking for nasties,

It would just be good to see where it surfaced from thats all Ive been searching but still no luck and after all those scans I would say its pretty clean.

Not sure what you mean that it came in x86 and x64 versions though I just downloaded the Trial http://www.bome.com/Restorator/download.html and that option was never brought up I thought the app was universal so to speak and worked on both x86 and x64 but I could be wrong :idk:

But either way there both free for us and they both seem to work. :)

I've made a small program dedicated to changing the start orb. It works great.

"7Orb Customizer"

You will have to google it. Just had over 1000 downloads and only 1 person couldn't get it to work that i know of.
