If this doesn't belong/deserve its own thread please feel free to merge ...

This thread will be a hot soup of collections of info and workarounds for the new Windows 10 OS found online.

If anyone was unaware Microsoft has renewed its Privacy Policy and Service Agreement. The new services agreement goes into effect on 1 August 2015:

"We will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith belief that doing so is necessary to”, for example, “protect their customers” or “enforce the terms governing the use of the services”. https://edri.org/microsofts-new-small-print-how-your-personal-data-abused/

The new Windows 10 has a fair few things that can be disabled and altered to better help protect your personal data, hopefully this helps some VC members who still value such things as privacy. The following will be bits'n'pieces of information from around the net, but I have tried everything myself and can verify that they work.

Head to Settings > Privacy, and disable everything, unless there are some things you really need.
While within the Privacy page, go to Feedback, select Never in the first box, and Basic in the second box.
Head to Settings > Update and Security > Advanced Options > Choose how updates are delivered, and turn the first switch off.
Disable Cortana by clicking the Search bar/icon.
Disable web search in Search by going to Settings, and turning off Search online and include web results.
Open up the Command Prompt by launching cmd as an administrator, and enter the following:

sc delete DiagTrack
sc delete dmwappushservice
echo "" > C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Diagnosis\ETLLogs\AutoLogger\AutoLogger-Diagtrack-Listener.etl

Open up the Group Policy Editor by launching gpedit.msc as an administrator. Go through Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Data Collection and Preview Builds. Double click Telemetry, hit Disabled, then apply.
While still in the Group Policy Editor, go through Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > OneDrive, double click Prevent the usage of OneDrive for file storage, hit Enabled, then apply. While still in the Group Policy Editor, go through Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Defender, double click Turn Off Windows Defender, hit Enabled, then apply.

Open up the Registry Editor by launching regedit as an administrator. Go through HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\DataCollection, select AllowTelemetry, change its value to 0, then apply.

In GPEdit.msc:
Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Defender, double click Turn Off Windows Defender, hit Enabled, then apply.
(Replace with a good Anti-Virus)
Right Click Start Menu > Computer Management > Expand 'Task Scheduler' > Expand 'Task Scheduler Library' > Expand 'Microsoft' > Expand 'Windows' > Click on 'Application Experience' > Disable all Tasks in Folder > Click on 'Customer Experience Improvement Program' > Disable all Tasks in Folder
Optional: Click on 'Task Scheduler Library' > Disable any Tasks you don't want Enabled.
In Computer Management > Expand 'Services and Applications' > Click on 'Services' > Right Click on 'Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service' > Properties > Startup Type 'Disabled' > Stop if running.

Also very helpful is Take Ownership http://cdn5.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/TakeOwnership.zip Then go to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc, and take ownership of the hosts file. After you take ownership of the file head on over to: http://paste2.org/A1sv86VF and copy/paste it into your host file and save.

I have some other stuff too, for getting rid of OneDrive and other things. If anyone wants those too let me know.

Cheers.

What Anti-Virus do you suggest thats free to replace Defender?

I would recommend Avast or AVG, even their free versions that I use rank above most other paid AV's

Some of them that has surprised me is the "360 Total Security" turned out to be better than nod32, avast to even BitDefender. And the best thing is free :peace:

angel960 (http://virtualcustoms.net/member.php/261036-angel960) 360 is no where near as configurable as bitdefender.

well..Hmmmm.ok,so here is my 2 cents..lol..i use none of the above. In fact i dont use virus protection at all but only a few virus scanners.Malwarebytes being one of them.I wouldn't suggest this to the average user however if you do alot of surfing in rogue sites.I have being doing it this way now for 5 or 6 years without any problems.I do a manual scan once a week,or if my computer seems a little sluggish or starts to act funny (a rare occurance).I really can not remember the last time i had a virus.I think the antivirus issue is more of a contraversial thing. We all have our different aspects on them.I will stick with what i got for preferable reasons though.

"virus scanners.Malwarebytes being one of them" MalwareBytes is not and even declares that it is not an AV. Truth be told that most virus's can get installed without AV noticing but a good one will still detect a program doing something it shouldn't. So I would ahve to strongly agree with; "I wouldn't suggest this to the average user". Especially since AV like Avast and AVG exist that don't impact performance much at all and are not a hassle like traditional Norton or McAfee.

Also Alpha please stop tagging me in things

Well i have to say that i have found more viruses, malware, adware, and spyware with malwarebytes then nortons or any other program that i have used. And yes,it does pick up viruses. It may not be called a "virus scanner",but it does pick them up.And the program does not run in the background as i only use it to scan and i have it turned off after scanning. So there is no impact on performance.I apologize for tagging you.I will refraim from doing so.Did not think it would be a bother. But i guess i was wrong.Anyway's,like i said,we all have our different views on this subject.I did't reply as an arguement to this thread but only my views.Anyone is more then welcome to disagree, but i will stick to what i have done for years without any issues.

Obviously my comment is going to cause people to lash out at me because of different perspectives on this issue.I do not want to cause an arguement or get banned for being opinionated..lol.So no matter the negative comments towards me,i will no longer reply to any other arguement regaurding this issue. To each their own.

There's no reason for anyone to lash out at anyone bro.. everyone has their opinion on this. Malwarebytes has always been my go to program anytime i feel like ive picked up a virus.. and i always scanned with Avast right after.. although ive been testing Bitdefender for the last month. I think all AV's have their ups and downs.. or this one has something this one doesnt. Some have a better runtime scan then a scantime scan and vice vs. Its all about finding out whats best for you

Let me tell you that after having tried to defend bit for almost one year and even though he was "exceptions to or keygen cracks" the eliminated
I do not completely blocked spywares and malwares.:anger:
I expected much more of it but ultimately stay with the "360", and so far I have no problems.:peace:

to each there own. what works for one may not work for someone else.

my personal prefs:
bitdefender, no autoscan, full c dive scan once a week, scan everything else right after i download it.
malwarebytes, no autoscan, full c dive scan once a week, scan everything else right after i download it.
i find as good as each are occasionally one will catch something the other missed.
