I would like to start learning

any tips some one would like to throw out there to help get me started on them building? I.E. programs i should get, Videos i should watch, Sites to check out, people to talk, background things i should start learning.

Well to start theme building you need to have a few items on your computer like photoshop, windows style builder, and a resource editor like restorator. Once you have those items first thing id recommenced is updating the windows style builder with Mr Grims class map to make location easier to find [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

ok i got gimp and restorator, and gimp (from playing with it) i assume is the alt to photo shop, is there a free download for windows style builder? and also is there other style builders I.E. MAC/alienware

Unfortunately from what I have seen Windows Style Builder is by far the easiest for msstyle editing. Hex Editing and some other more mundane methods are possible however. As for a free download to Windows Style Builder, I'm not saying anything but there's a lot of different things on the internet if you search hard enough...

Personally I am still slightly confused with non-msstyle editing stuff such as editing system files, but a free alternative to Restorator (which can be quite expensive) is Resource Hacker with Resource Hacker FX (patch by another person).

I'll create a separate topic for that later as I have my own questions, but I hope I got the general idea for you and those who are more proficient in theme and system file styling could check if I got it right or not.

PS: Interesting inactive user mod, making me post. It's a good incentive I must say.
