Most of the applications that are available to hide the Windows 7 taskbar completely hide the taskbar including the Start button ( Start orb). ShellWin is a free tool that hides only the actual taskbar area without hiding the Start orb.

The tool also lets you do some other things. The last box in the ShellWin dialog-box lists all running applications and selecting an application name will bring the application to the foreground. One can also use the last empty box as Run dialog-box to quickly launch programs and other native Windows features.
