his was long due! Opera, one of the alternate browsers I use, apart from Mozilla, in spite of having several good features wasn’t able to live upto the increasing expectations, mainly because of the fact that there wasn’t any support for extensions like Firefox or Chrome .

Opera Opera 11 will support Extensions

But now there’s a good news for all Opera users. Opera has officially announced that the upcoming version of Opera, ie Opera 11, will support Extensions. The extensions will be similar to those are in the browsers like Firefox as they’ve tried to make it easy to port extensions from other browsers .

Extensions in Opera will allows you to easily add new functionality to your Opera 11 browser experience. Developers can easily create extensions using open standards (HTML5, CSS, JavaScript) and supported APIs.

Extensions will be based on the W3C Widget specifications and this is being considered for an Open Standard effort.

For developers who want to build extensions for Opera, they can checkout DevOpera for all the information needed for extension development of Opera 11, once the first alpha is released. The alpha release will support injectable JavaScript, callouts, certain UI items and a basic Tabs and Windows API.

Opera is a well known entity in the mobile browser business but haven’t had a great run in the desktop business. This is indeed a good move to get back into the Desktop browser competition with Internet Explorer, Firefox & Chrome .
