Important!!! if you have installed the icons and you have lost your sound then you will need to restore the shell32.dll in the system32 folder using the restore options on 7tsp to restore a single file, if you are using a creative sound card then this will be the case as they look at the shell32.dll as being unsigned and it will not function.

Hi Weed and welcome to Virtual customs, what Windows 7 build are you using and what pack are you trying to install, also did you turn of UAC when attempting to install?

im using build 7600 x64 i've try to install the ultimate package and yes UAC was full disabled.
i did step by step from the readme file but nothing happens :(

That is very strange, the installer has been heavily tested and Generator and myself have had no issues with it, just out of interest are there any dll's with .bak extension in System32 or sysWOW64, the ones to look for are imageres.dll.bak, shell32.dll.bak or imagesp1.dll.bak, if they are then you will need to remove them before the installer will work, the uninstall script is meant to do that but if for some reason it has failed then you will have to do it manually.

There are 3 dll's in each of the folders, system32 and sysWOW64, they need to be replaced with the ones that are included in the pack you downloaded.

You will need to find a way to do this while they are in use if you are not dual booting, I have managed before to drag the dll's you want to replace to the desktop and then replace it with the ones you downloaded and repeat for each files.

If you manage to do that you will then need to delete the icon cache, you will need to set your folder options to show hidden folders for this and the icon cache is located in: C:\Users\user name\AppData\Local\IconCache, when finished you will need to reboot.

You should now see most of the icons but some will still be the same that have thumbnails on them, you will then need to clear the thumbnail cache, this can be done by doing an extended disk cleanup, type that into the search in the start menu if you can't find it manually, once complete restart again and hopefully all your icons will now change.

regarding the installer: Did you restart the PC straight after installing the icons?, the files are copied over to the sys folders as temp files (shell32.tmp etc..) until the system restarts and then they replace the system files once the system restarts.


Other things I can think of to try if you still wish to try the installer would be:
Rename the folder that the install script is in to something short and simple with no spaces, and place it in the drives root (for example: 'c:\setup').
Maybe your anti-virus could be stopping files being replaced so maybe try disabling that just whilst the icons are installing.

That is how I used to do it before Generator made the script, it was always simple and straight forward that way, one thing though before you do that, did you run the script as Administrator?

ok this might sound crazy but I installed the Ultimate Blue glass 64X... and it messed up my sound.

everything would work right except my default laptop speakers. every time i tried playing something it would freeze or give me an error window.

after installing and spending hours messing with the drivers i just decided to reinstall windows 7. and as i kept adding things and personalizing I installed the icons and after restart i had no sound again.

had to do system restore from before the restore made by the icon installer.

and now i have a weird mix of default icons and blue glass ones.

i tried the uninstall but is says that i don't have the icon pack installed so that wont work.

so IDK... :idk:

it's not really a big deal tho.

First sorry to hear about the trouble you've had :(, Second can i ask what Build of Windows 7 are you on? This is the first time I've heard of the issue however other member's like Mr Grim May have heard of it before :idk: .

As far as i know all of the files in System32: imageres.dll , imagesp1.dll , Shell32.dll and zipfldr.dll & also the same for (sysWOW64) seeming as you are on x64, dont have anything to do with any Sound driver/.dll's but thats just me So others might be able to verify that for us.
If you can do system restore then it will (I Think) Return all the Modified .dll's back to original But coz you have tried to install once I suggest Navigating to x:\Windows\System32 & also x:\Windows\sysWOW64 (x) being your main install path/drive, and looking for: " imageres.dll.bak , imagesp1.dll.bak , Shell32.dll.bak , zipfldr.dll/bak "

If you see them there then that is why you are unable to install the Pack.
So provided you Backed up your original's you will be safe to delete them files and install the Pack again.:)

As for the sound issue I can't help much with that Sorry.

Hi again Mate, For the icon's not changing I would suggest you try this http://www.virtualcustoms.net/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=136, But again the sound issue :idk: When i get time tonight i will do a bit of further testing just to see because All the icon Pack's are the same so if 1 Fail's they all do :( But I amm currently Running that same Pack and I have had no such issue's So I hope you get to the bottom of it.

Have you disabled UAC and run the installer as administrator, if you are dual booting with another OS then you can boot into the other OS to replace the files if necessary.

I'm not dual boot, just W7 64 bits 7600.

hey, just wanted to let you guys know that i have the exact same problem mentioned earlier in that running the installer screws up my sound. it has something to do with the shell32.dll file, but i don't know what.
i have build 7600, which is the official build being released in a couple of weeks, so this could continue to be an issue.

Not quite sure what's going on with SkyDrive lately but the links appear to be working again (I havn't changed or fixed anything link wise! :S ). I think we might need to re-upload the packs else-where Mark to prevent this from keep happening.

I have noticed that on a couple of things that are zipped up on SkyDrive, that SkyDrive insist's on stripping the file extension of the zips so it maybe required for the downloads to be renamed to include the '.zip' part of the filename again.

@jimpict: Not sure to what is causing the sound issues with certain setups, I'll re-download and test them again in my virtual machine and see if I can reproduce the error here.

Hi there solid and welcome to virtualsuctoms,

Can you do a check for us and Navigate to the following directories
c:\windows\System32 & also c:\windows\SysWOW64 folders and look for the following .dll's
imageres.dll, imagesp1.dll and shell32.dll in those directories i mentioned and making sure that there are only 1 of each of those .dll's i mentioned.
There may also be .dll's like: imageres.dll.BAK, imagesp1.dll.BAK and shell32.dll.BAK in the same System32 and SysWOW64 folders if there are then this is why you are unable to install a new icon pack so you will need to manually delete all the one's with .BAK but only do so if you are certain that you have imageres.dll, imagesp1.dll and shell32.dll in both directories.

Alternatively you could also run the "UninstallCleanup" Batch Script and this will Delete all of the .BAK (ie:Backups) This is what i would do and then try and Install the Icons.

This is not 100% fix to your problem but it is the most common and all i can really suggest personally until somebody else can give you a better explanation.Just make sure you backup anything you cant afford to lose as this can go wrong and a Clean Install of Windows maybe required.

Ok mate sorry i can't help ya any further all i can suggest is do a clean install of Windows, Personally I do a clean install at least once a week lol but I have become a bit of a clean freak so as soon as i screw something up or break something or something wont work like in your case I would just Reformat and have a nice clean environment to destroy again, But that's just me and my system specs allow me to do so rather quickly.

So i hope ya get the issue sorted :)

You can only install one pack at a time, if you want to make a custom pack then you would need to download the sperate icon packs without installers and then edit the dll's yourself to add the ones you want.

Eeek! :shock:

Try booting up in safe-mode and see if you can and run system restore..

If that doesn't work then try this:

reboot and keep tapping F8 whilst its loading Windows, (you should get an 'Advanced Boot Options' screen)
choose 'Safe-mode, Command Prompt Only' and hit Enter key,
when the command prompt appears type the following in:

sfc /SCANFILE=c:\windows\system32\shell32.dll

The file should now get replaced with the default one that comes with windows.
If it works you will need to run a System Restore to put your system back to how it was before trying to patch it.

I would have liked to have come back sooner to make this post however illness has prevented me from doing so until now.


This isn't a complaint. I just want to point out that I had an issue installing the "7600 RTM Black & Gold Icon Pack X64". After rebooting I simply got a black screen with the Reboot/Restart button in 1 bottom corner & the Ease of Access button in the other bottom corner.

As I still had my install of Win XP on another hd I put that back in to look at the imageres.dll, imagesp1.dll & shell32.dll files in both the System32 & SysWOW64 folders. I found that they all had .tmp on the end of the file name along with another file underneath each (a .BAK file if I remember correctly). I renamed all the dll's by taking the by taking the .tmp off of the end before booting back into Win 7. Once I did booted into Win 7 a command window opened saying the install had gone successfully however no icons were actually installed which I thought was strange.

I ended up booting back into XP & adding the dll's from the "7600 RTM Black & Gold Icon Pack X64" myself overwriting the default dll's (obviously I'd made a backup of the default dll's before doing the install in the first place). That worked :) I have since found that folders return to the default colour if you have the view set as medium icons. No big deal as I generally have my view set to list.

I'd also like to report that the icon named "BLK Fonts 2" doesn't do anything as the icon for Fonts is contained within fontext.dll rather than imageres.dll, imagesp1.dll or shell32.dll.

Not 3 for each no. There was a imageres.dll.TMP & a imageres.dll.BAK. There was also a imagesp1.dll.TMP & a imagesp1.dll.BAK and shell32.dll.TMP with shell32.dll.BAK.

Maybe I did need to refresh the IconCache "shrugs". Just glad I got it sorted :)

The main icons that were changed are in imageres.dll so you would only be missing out on a few, the main folder icons will still be OK.

Yes a fresh install will fix it lol before ya do have a look around the forum for more answers as they have been answered many times before.There needs to be some sort of Troubleshooting section for those that have issues with the installer, Just filled with possible scenarios of what can go wrong.I will talk to Mr GRiM next time i see him and suggest it.

Here (http://virtualcustoms.net/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=310) is a thread that will give you a better understading of how everything works if you read up well on a couple of post there you should be to solve the problem on your own and not have to reinstall.

Or try running in a commad prompt
sfc /scannow

and then restart. :)

after seeing that i cleared iconcache and were the same.

there was some default folders but still were some mr grim's icons.
i want only default folder what's going on?


looks like you still need to delete the thumbnail cache, you can do that by doing a disk cleanup and make sure you select thumbnails.

I installed Glass pack icon and backup necessary files ( 3 files mentioned for X86) but now i wants to test Gold packs icon set ..just wants to know what i have to do?

The backups were made in the same location in system32 and SysWOW64 and have .Bak at the end on there names

quick question what would cause the icons to say there is not a script and not load on my pc i have tried several different things and nothing seems to work I went to a retail copy of 7 instead of the frankenbuild i was running and now having troubles with some of the customizations




ok update I reformated and added the folders first before anything else and they went on fine so not quite sure what was causing the issues but just glad they are up here i hate those stock folders

I had problems installing the icons with the script after i had done all my SSD Tweaks and disabled some of windows functions and features the problem was mostly due to the "System Restore" I think as that is disabled in my OS.

Have you made any changes like that to your system?

Hi all,

Awesome icons Mr. Grim, but I've got a pretty serious issue with the installer package. Everything goes smoothly until my machine restarts, upon which my audio no longer works. It seems like it doesn't recognize the drivers or something . . .

Anyway, after un-installing and resetting the Icon Cache every things all good again - except I'm left with boring old normal icons :(

I tried several times following the directions of the read-me as well as different packages (Black Ultimate, Black Glass), but it still cuts out my audio on restarting. It also freezes the whole sound volume selection dialog box thingy whenever I open it (I'm not sure what it's actually called :"> )

EDIT: Also, I can't play DVD's with WMP after installing the icons, but i can with VLC media player. Still no sound though.


Well, I'm stumped. I cant think why installing icons should upset my drivers, if in fact that is what's happening.

Any ideas what's going on and how to fix it???

Sorry to hear that you having problems but the installer has been tested and as long as you follow all the instructions exactly and you are using the correct icons for your Windows 7 build then they will install correctly, if you have a dual boot then you can replace the manually without the installer, rename all the original dll's and then copy and paste the ones from the icon pack and then you need to delete the icon cache and then restart the Windows 7 OS, then the only thing you need to do is run a disk cleanup and delete the thumbnail cache.

It might be the installer, I haven't noticed it myself and I did not create the installer so not sure if it could do that, hopefully Generator can answer that question.

The installer itself doesn't create any logs in the Windows Event Log, The Windows Logs require special API's which are not possible in a batch script alone. If the installer does hit an error it should just cancel the install routine fully and leave your system untouched. (apart from an extra System Restore point added and maybe the backups if it got that far on in the code.)
I placed as many error handler routines in the installer that I could possibly think of to ensure it stops installing if problems arise during the process.

Having said that, If you used a wrong version of the installer (wrong version numbers for the dll's compared to your your Windows build) then the installer doesn't recognize this as a problem and continues.. This causes problems ranging from the Windows Sound System failing all the way up to Windows Logon failing upon startup (you just get a blank black screen or upon entering your password it ask's for it again and again.), this should leave some reports in the logs.

I recently tried to change the default icons of Windows 7 RTM, using Mr. Grim's Ultimate Icon and Blue Glass Icon packs for 7600.16385 x86. When i rebooted and tried to play an .AVI file, Windows Media Player stopped working. I followed the instructions in the README.txt, so I don't understand what I did wrong. I tried to install the red icons with the batch file on windows7 x64, but for some reason my pc messed up and I had to reinstall windows because explorer.exe wouldn't start, it gave me a weird error. Anyways, what should I do to install these without messing up my windows again?

Well I'm sorry to say, but I prolly won't be trying this again until I get my second computer running, which might take a while.

I was finally able to change my icons and KEEP sound without issues, thanks to cashis and Mr. Grim. All I had to do was swap out all the files in the icon pack except shell32.dll, then clear the windows icon cache, disk cleanup and that's it. For those of you that are having the same issues that i had, just change imageres.dll and imagesp1.dll and leave the default shell32.dll alone.

Yup try the uninstall cleanup script and then open a command prompt and type "sfc /scannow" without the quotes. That should get you sorted.

Sorry to hear about your troubles :( did you read the "readme" that came with the packs? and did you disable UAC?

What I would do is press F8 when booting up and launch start up repair or boot from your installation disc and do a system repair from there.

Once you get your system up and running right pop back in and we can try and start from the start if you like.

Thanks for great Icons.. They are amazing work and specialy the new orange ones, hav looked for some like them...

Something I wonder is, if I install the Orange Glass it´s not all Icon´s wich change, have seen it before.
One is the start orb and the mail and network..how to fix that so the pakkage will be perfect ?

I do not have a Creative sound card.

I tried this on an hp pavillion. The sound driver is the IDT HD Audio CODEC.

Same happened to me, too! I am on a HP Pavillion DV9780eg and I had no sound after the install and my video-files did not work.
Had some problems while installing (the dlls did not change but the baks got created) and installed them manually.
After the install and a restart the icons started changing, I deleted the iconcache via Microangelo On Display and rebuilt it, but my small icons did not change.
So I had to do the disk-cleanup like it was mentioned here and then all hell broke loose... Somehow a bunch of my icons was deleted like the whole Office-suite and Acrobat reader. I found some defective icon-links in my true launch bar that pointed to the Windows/Installer directory, and I think that one got cleaned by the cleanup. So I thought... just deinstall Office and reinstall it, but that did not work without these deleted files.... After three tries with the Win7 system-restore I gave up and had to use a ghost-image to get my system back into working-shape (thank god I did a full backup only 7 says ago).
Now I am just too scared to try this for a second time, it's a shame, because I would really like to use those icons.
Btw... Windows 7 Professional 64 bit.

try this to restore your system.

1. Open a elevated command prompt.

2. In the elevated command prompt, type sfc /scannow and press Enter.

3. When the scan is complete, hopefully you will see all is ok.
The sfc /scannow command (System File Checker) scans the integrity of all protected Windows 7 system files and replaces incorrect corrupted, changed, or damaged versions with the correct versions if possible.

NOTE: If not, then you can attempt to run a System Restore using a restore point dated before the bad file occured to fix it. You may need to repeat doing a System Restore until you find a older restore point that may work.


4. When done, close the elevated command prompt.


to see the log file afterwards if you want do this:

1. Open a elevated command prompt.

2. In the elevated command prompt, type:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt and press Enter.
NOTE: This will place a sfcdetails.txt file on your desktop with the SFC scan details from the CBS.LOG.


3. Close the elevated command prompt.

4. Open the sfcdetails.txt file on your desktop to see the SFC scan details in the CBS.LOG.

5. You can safely delete the sfcdetails.txt file afterwards if you like.

I was turned on to the packs after being told by bensam56 at RT about your help making windows 7 Nvidia edition.
I have had my troubles with his installs, so i decided to just stick with ultimate 7x64. Then mod it myself. Of course with credit to all who supplied my mods. Its only personal, im not selling, or proffiting, just enjoying!

My two questions i had for you. First, Do you know what Theme Bensam56 is using in his Nvidia 7? I would like that as i enjoy the Nvidia greens.

Also, Is there a chance of you making an self installing icon pack with the Green glass, but with Green where the black is, and black where the green is? Almost like an alien green?

I know this is a lot to ask, but i was hopeful.

The libraries icon changed but the explorer on taskbar remained stock. Follow this youtube instructions and you will be able to solve this issue. Keep in mind if it doesn't work then clear your icon cached and thumbnail. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the Video, I do some of mine a bit like that but without all the notepad stuff, if you right click on the pined explorer icon and hold shift at the same time you get the send to option in the context menu, just select send to desktop shortcut and then change the icon like in the video.

The other way to do it is to change the icon for explorer in Restorator, open up explorer.exe in c:/Windows and then drag and drop the new explorer icon on the first icon in the icons directory and then open task manager and close explorer and then save on Restorator, then click on new task in Task manager and start explorer again, I do it the same way for changing the start orb and user pic also and I usually do all 3 at one time.

Just remember to take ownership of explorer before you try to change anything.

Sorry for so many questions but do you know of anyway to install these for just one user. I am using a computer with multiple users, and (not that these arent beautiful) I don't think they would appreciate me changing all of their icons too. Thank You.

Found the biggest issue with the script not working is because of the bak of the replaced dll.

This happens if you changed the icons before or run a installer for one of the icons packages.

You can run the unstaller for the past icon packages you installed (if you can remeber which ones...lol)

Or look in any of the packages and check out the read me.

Find out which dll where backed up and then go an delete the bak.

After that the package you want should install fine.

Seems the installer script just can't deal with older bak and wont finsh the install or it does and nothing changes.

I tried to install your Package "Black Glass Icons" on my Windows 7 Professional (x64) Build 7600.

I followed the Tutorial in the readme.txt. (Disabled UAC, deactivated Antivir, started installer as Admin)
But the command promt says "The Command "ATTRIB isn't written correctly or can not be found."

What can I do now...?

That icon is actually the one used from your exeplorer.exe in C:\Windows, to change it you need to replace that icon or you could simply make a desktop shortcut for explorer and then use the change icon in properties, when searching for the explorer icon it will be in imageres.dll, after you change the desktop shortcut icon unpin the old one from the taskbar and pin the new one.
