Little update on this. I made it so you can now, along with removing the Up button, customize the padding of the Address bar and Search bar (these 2 were added in Windows 8.0/8.1). Still looking for little things to customize here and there. ;)

EDIT: Almost forgot to say that you can remove the Search box entirely as well.

Sorry, that's not something I can do with just a simple program. That would have to be a DLL like OldNewExplorer, which I don't have the skills to do.

how can I make it start with Windows? I tried Mr. Grim's installer version but somehow Win 8.1 rejected it. It worked since the moment I double clicked on the x64 file in it, although, when I restarted the machine, it didn't (obviously) start...

updated @ 4:11pm

finally added to the startup items list
