the images are too large to fit , get an image you want then split it to two parts then try to put in each side of the start menu

You will need to increase the default panel size, you can either modify that property in Start Menu > Panels > Basic > Places List > Panels > Places List or add the property to Start Menu > Panels > Aero > Top > Places List > Panels > Places List, you will also need to alter the same property for Start Menu > Panels > Basic > Places List > Panels > Logoff and make it the same width.
