Hello,

I've been having a rather annoying problem since the release of Cumulative Update KB3200970 for Windows 10 RS1. Simply put, it keeps failing. To make things worse, Microsoft still hasn't been any help. I've submitted the problem to them and neither they, nor anyone else on the support forums have been any help. Here is the error code I found in the event viewer for it.

Error code : 0x8007007E

Can anyone please help me with this? Because I'm one of those people who prefers to get updates applied and done with as soon as possible so as to get them out of the way. This one is starting to seriously piss me off to be frank. It keeps popping up while I'm busy with my daily crap and naturally me being all OCD on update matters makes me have to stop what I'm doing every time so the computer can restart. Yet, each time the damn thing fails and has to revert the changes.

If anyone can please help me fix this BS I would be forever grateful because I'm pretty much ready to stick a firecracker in this damn laptop and blow it up. :hell:

Here is the Microsoft link to the cumulative update. Simply download it, and double click it to install.

I've already tried that method. It also keeps failing. :sigh:

What is it exactly that you are trying to do? Are you trying to download the update? Are you running third party antivirus on your computer? I know you are getting the error, but when? Does it just pop up randomly?

It's the latest cumulative update for windows 10 rs1. I found the error code in the event viewer. basically it downloads the update and makes me restart my system to install it. It gets about 7% through the install and then restarts. It then gives the general update failure message and reverts. upon logging in i get a notification claiming updates could not be installed. looking in update history it says that Cumulative Update for Windows 10 RS1 x64 systems KB3200970 has failed.

I just had to trick my system into thinking my connection is a metered one to temporarily stop automatic updates until i can get this fixed. Hopefully someone here will figure this out, because Microsoft doesn't seem to know what the hell they're talking about. All they give me is useless outdated software that does nothing to fix it while claiming it SHOULD fix it. I really wish those asshats hadn't abandoned Windows 7. I would gladly downgrade to a fully activated copy of Windows 7 if it hadn't been frikkin' abandoned. Windows 10 has given me nothing but hell since it first came out [just like everything else that came after Windows 7].

Try saving this in notepad as a command file, and run as administrator. Restart, and try once more to MANUALLY install the update.

:startclean
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits

RMDIR /S /Q "%Windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Download\"
MKDIR "%Windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Download\"

Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase

net start wuauserv
net start bits

Ok, what will this do exactly? [just want to make sure before running it since my system runs an OEM copy of Windows 10]

It cleans up your Windows Updates folder. I run it after every update.

OOOHHH, ok. yeah that was something that someone on ms forums said to do as well [albeit a different method] but that failed as well. Either way it's running as we speak and when it got tot the stopping bits thing it said it was not even started... could that be the cause?

hmmm... ok.. well I know this one is taking a lot longer than the other method. the other method was pracitcally instant. It ran in a cmd windows as well but after getting to the download spot it practically zoomed through the rest and closed so fast i didnt even have time to blink. Let's hope THAT one was a dud and pray this one works. Here's to hoping.

[Also, i just looked up the error code and found some claims on it being almost always related to updates. claims stated it was usually a corrupted or missing set of registry entrees. however the only fixes were for friggin windows xp trhough to windows 7 and claimed to be running some sfc/scannow and dism commands... Both of which i hope i can avoid since I don't want to lose all of my friggin customisations. Also I couldn't understand a word of the friggin commands it was saying to use... friggin older BS imo.]

Practically 100% of the help on the MS forums is scannow, and dism cleanup even when it is totally unrelated to the problem at hand.

I have a laptop that runs TH1, and the latest update does almost the same thing.
I have been done almost everything including all of the above..and updating still fails.

Every time the laptop restart, it comes with a error and roll back the update..

My guess is that we have to wait for a fix or a new cumulative update.

The update that has some problems is:

KB3200970 if your running Build 14393.447 (http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB3200970)

KB3198586 (http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB3198586)if your running (http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB3200970) Build 10586.679 (http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB3198586)

Ohh, ok then. welp, lets hope this works. [tbh, most of the results that said that response were from a ton of different websites. Some from forums.windowscentral.com , some from www.personalcomputerfixes.com , some from a few I've never even heard of before. But there was nothing for Windows 10, lol. All either WinXP or Win7]. But still, lets hope this works. it's at 52.4% atm. BTW, how do I turn on Background Inteligent Transfer Service [bits] if this doesn't do so. Because that one for some reason was marked as having NOT been on in both this one and the one suggested on MS Forums.

oooohhhh... ok then. Thanks. I'll just have to keep my computers network disguized as a metered connection until it gets fixed since I can't actually disable automatic update on mine [Mickysour needs to get their heads outta their asses and let home edition users disable the auto update feature...]

I also was tired of automatic update until i used this:
http://sihmar.com/disable-or-block-windows-10-drivers-updates/ (http://sihmar.com/disable-or-block-windows-10-drivers-updates/)

It can hide the updates so Windows don't automatic update, restart, rollback, automatic update, restart, automatic update, restart, rollback, automatic update, restart, and so on and so on...
;)

Blocking Windows 10 Drivers Automatic Updates

Download the Microsoft WUShowHide Tool. (http://download.microsoft.com/download/F/2/2/F22D5FDB-59CD-4275-8C95-1BE17BF70B21/wushowhide.diagcab)
Run the file downloaded in the previous step. You will need admin rights to execute it.
Click the ‘Next’ button from the tool’s main screen. It will begin scanning your machine for all installed Windows 10 drivers.
From the displayed list, simply choose the drivers for whom you don’t want automatic updates to take place. Click ‘Next’ when done.

Windows 10 drivers are kept updated at all times by the OS. This has a minor side-effect, though. If a faulty driver is disabled by you manually, Windows 10 will keep re-enabling it to check for updates. If any user wishes to disable this process, and keep a driver permanently hidden, here is what needs to be done.

Look at my previous reply

Thanks I found this same tool from another page but the copy from that link [despite being the same one apparently] didn't detect any cumulative updates. So I replaced it with this one and this time it found it. This will work fine until MS realises they f*cked up and fixes their mistake.

Hmmm... in other words some idiots decided to disregard the warnings and blame MS for what they did to themselves.... As always, dumb-asses and MS seem to go hand in hand together, lol.

But yeah, in all seriousness, that actually makes sense.

I was on TH2 and I did everything to update my laptot to RS1. Anyhing worked ... and my Toshiba went, time after time, to the previous version after 75%

My only solution was a clean install.

After that, my RS1-windows update froze when attempting to install the latest cumulative updates, so ... I've installed them through windows catalog, one by one. And it worked

Windows 10 is a nightmare ...

it's something on you end cause other than rolling back my nvidia driver i haven't had any real issues with 10 updates.

I have to agree, 99.9% of the time when Windows Updates will not install, as long as the update engine is not broken and needing reinstalling the problem lies on the user(s) end.

More than likely you have something running in the background that is preventing the installation of the update, be it a program or a service, something is running that is not letting the install complete.

Microsoft does not recommend installing Windows Updates in safe mode otherwise I would tell you to try that. What you should do is disable everything other than what Windows needs to run then try to install the update.

Personally i would disable all 3rd party software including 3rd party antivirus. It may or may not help.Just my input and suggestion from experience.your issue may differ.

Maybe ... but when your OS is totally clean of third-party, clean of viruses and have no problem at all with drivers, and you still can't upgrade ... the problem goes beyond the user, I think ... (My laptop is almost 10 years old and it survives:bunny2:)

Erin (http://virtualcustoms.net/member.php/244469-Erin) no offense but it is almost certainly something on your system blocking the update from installing, or the comp is old enough that the latest updates won't work on it.

OK:

As I wrote before, because of some libraries needed for my job, which seemed to stop the upgrade to anniversary, i decided to make a clean install with Media creation tool-USB.

Once this was done, I had problem installing the two latest updates for 1607, flash update and anti-malware update, so I downloaded one by one, restarting between them, from Microsoft Update Catalog.

That's all ...
