Hi to all! does anyone know if can I change those icons via resource hacker?

You have to create new entries for Icons in the shell32.mui.dll files in both the en-us system32 and syswow64 folders under Windows directory. Once you create each entry import the icon of your choice and make each entry match the number of those icons in the actual shell32.dll file.

For example if the # of the icon in shell32.dll you want to change is 10. Then you create the entry with first the # of the icon joined with semicolon referencing the language which for english is 1033. So your final result would look like 10:1033 and so on.

Then you must take ownership of each shell32.dll.mui files and rename them (don't delete) and then copy the new one in place of each in both directories.

You CANNOT edit the shell32.dll directly with RESHACK otherwise it will black screen and you have to restore.

I did this and used a blank icon to simply hide them all together. This only hides the icons. The buttons are still there. But aesthetically it looks better for me. You can use your own icons of your choice but make sure they're not too big or they will look distorted. I believe a good size is either 32 or 64 mp.

Here is how my reshack shell32.dll.mui file looks with the entries to each icon in the command bar:

The result:

79574

You only want to replace 2 files, one in C:\Windows\System32\en-US and the other in C:\Windows\SysWOW64\en-US

The entries look perfect. Make sure to restart your system. If you're not seeing change still, execute Disk Cleanup and make sure clear Thumbnails is checked. Use WinAero Tweaker to clear system icon cache. Then reboot and see if your changes appear.

No, do not edit the shell32.dll file.

Are you taking ownership of the original files and renaming them to something like shell32.dll.mui_ORIG ?

And what are your system specs? Windows Version, etc. Though, this method should work in any version of windows.

if are here someone on RS5 1809 then can upload the original shell file from build 1809 for you
then go to c/windows/system32 and syswow64
and take ownership your bad shell file and cut it and paste on desktop and copy new file for 1809 thats all:Smile:

Really I don't know why can't change them. I suspected that, because my windows are on Greek language maybe is for this reason, but I changed the language to greek via resource hacker, but nothing again. Maybe should change the language on shell32.dll too or I will get a black screen? I don't know what happen. yeah but I saw a post where a member did it can't seem to remember where is the topic , just Mr Grim advice to work with mui files rather than dll

Nameless
May 31st, 2019, 04:41 PM
At my experience it is true for shell32.dll and explorer.exe specially since they are digitized since W8. If you patch them your System wont boot up. Thats why we patch shell32.dll.mui and explorer.exe.mui instead. But i patched alot of dll without any problem. This is all the System files that i patched on W10 without any issues.

Now to hide the explorer text menu i'm guessing that you would ave to edit the themes files\ make a theme. Since you cannot do that by using an invisible font since the font is used across the board. So you would end up having some unwanted invisible text menu in other locations. Then you would change the color of the explorer to a color that match the menu text to make it invisible. i'm guessing its a bmp files replacements.

I only advised against messing with the shell32.dll because of MS adding a digital signature that was removed after editing the file and then caused Windows to black screen, the new shell32.dll.mun file seems to be safe to edit and the best option.

I was wondering if 7TSP is compatible with W7 patchers ??
I'd like to be able to create my own custom iconpack but such way I can make an installer with all necessary files to be installed by it

I don't seem to figure how

7TSP and w7 patchers aren't same isn't it??

if there were any tutorial it be great lol

7tsp full name is Se7en theme source patcher and original created for w7
but working on w8 and on w10 without any problem but iPack is most safe
i think 7tsp is only for the skilled members because 7tsp know replace unsupported files on w10 if someone use custom pack for w7 on w10 = black screen as explorer.exe and shell32.dll
iPack is most secure because skip unsupported files on w10 if someone add explorer.exe and shell32.dll to custom icon pack

If you are not on the latest build 1903 then they will not exist, the C:\Windows\SystemResources directory is new to this build and so are the .mun files

Do i named my 7tsp files .mui or .mun in my Luxe iPack for example? Does it make a difference? because i ave noticed that the .mui files still in System32.
