Hello Windows Insiders, today we are releasing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22449 to the Dev Channel.
You may notice that this build number is higher than the Windows 11 preview builds you’ve been receiving.
That’s because we’re moving the Dev Channel back to receiving builds from our active development branch (RS_PRERELEASE).
This means the builds released to the Dev Channel no longer match the Windows 11 experience that will be released to customers on October 5th (https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/2021/08/31/windows-11-available-on-october-5/).
These builds are from the earliest stage in a new development cycle with the latest work-in-progress code from our engineers.
These aren’t always stable builds, and sometimes you will see issues that block key activities or require workarounds while flighting in the Dev Channel.
It is important to make sure you read the known issues listed in our blog posts as we document many of these issues with each flight.
Because of being at the earliest stage of a new development cycle, you won’t see new features or major changes in these builds right away.
These builds are also not matched to a specific release.
New features and OS improvements from these builds could show up in future Windows releases when they’re ready
and we may deliver them as full OS updates or servicing releases.

The Cumulative Update, marked 22509.1011 (KB5008918) is mean to test the servicing pipeline, and does not include any new features or fixes.

Windows 11 Dev Update Stack Package 721.1203.211.0 was added today
In a nutshell: As in the last week, Microsoft has also postponed an update stack package today, one day after the release of Windows 11 22518.
The new version is 721.1203.211.0. Microsoft stated this “We can provide improvements to the update function before the PC receives a monthly or feature update.
The update stack package will help ensure that your PC has the highest probability of installing new updates successfully and with the best and least disruptive method. “
So just have a look at Windows Update.

Task Manager Redesign & Efficiency Mode
We have updated the design of Task Manager to match the new Windows 11 design principles.
This includes a new hamburger style navigation bar and a new settings page.
A new command bar on each page gives access to common actions.
We are also excited to bring dark theme to Task manager and will automatically match the system-wide theme configured in the Settings app.

Last April, we experimented with a new feature called “Eco mode” in Task Manager and we’re bringing this back with a new brand name: Efficiency mode.
This feature is helpful when you notice an app consuming high resources and would like to limit its consumption
so that the system gives priority to other apps which will lead to faster foreground responsiveness and better energy efficiency.

You can apply Efficiency mode either by clicking on the command bar in the Processes page or right click on the process.
You can only apply Efficiency mode to single process and not to the entire group process.
If the option is grey out, it generally means that it’s a core Windows process and throttling it might affect the performance of the system.
The Efficiency mode process will be marked with a new leaf icon, and we are also introducing new pause icon

Flighting new builds to the Beta Channel
Today we are also releasing Build 22581 to Windows Insiders in the Beta Channel.
Insiders in the Beta Channel can now try out new features such as
Live Captions, Start folders, the redesigned Task Manager, tablet optimized taskbar and much more.
Now that the Dev and Beta Channels are receiving the same builds
the limited window has opened for Insiders to switch channels if you wish to do so by following these simple steps:
Open Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program (https://aka.ms/WIPSettings).
Select Choose your Insider settings.
Select Beta Channel.
The next time you receive an update, it will be for your new channel.
IMPORTANT: This window will close once we release builds with higher build numbers to the Dev Channel.
If your device stays on the Dev Channel and receives a build that is a higher build number than what is in the Beta Channel
you will have to do a clean installation of the released version of Windows (https://docs.microsoft.com/windows-insider/isos) 11 on your device to switch to the Beta Channel.
We will also be kicking off email reminders to Insiders in the Dev Channel about the open window to switch channels as well
so that Insiders in the Dev Channel have plenty of time and awareness to switch channels if desired while this window is open.
If your device is in the Beta Channel and you want to stay on the released version of Windows 11, you have 10 days or until we release a newer build to roll back.
If you do decide to roll back, be sure to promptly change your channel to Release Preview.
No action is required if you want to continue receiving preview builds in the Dev Channel.
As a reminder, we are evolving the way we develop and release to Insiders with the Dev and Beta Channels now representing parallel development paths from our engineers.
The Dev Channel will be a place where we will try out different concepts, incubate new ideas, and work on long lead items that may not get released to general customers.
The Beta Channel will be the place we preview experiences that are closer to what we will ship to our general customers.
However, this does not mean every feature we try out in the Beta Channel will ship.

Microsoft has released a new Update Stack Package version 922.319.111.0 to Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel.
Update Stack Packages will be delivered to Insiders through Windows Update just like builds and cumulative updates are.
Insiders in the Dev Channel today can go to Settings > Windows Update and check for updates to receive the Update Stack Package.

22581.100 seemed a bit buggy to me. right click menus would go blank and if you open settings, it opens to the top left out of view. Lots of odd behavior. I am waiting to see if I see a patch released that would resolve the issues before I try switching back to Beta. I went back to 22000.588 for now.

and works for me without any problems but you can send your feedbeck with your problem to insider team
or yes you can stay on this stabled 21h2 22000 version
all bugs can be fixed before final release because build 225xx is still only in the developer preview

We already reported about the official launch of Windows 11 22H2.
But August doesn't mean that the new version won't be ready until then.

With the last Insider, there were already some assumptions that this is the final version.
But according to our new information, Microsoft wants to reach RTM status at the end of May.
Although RTM (Release To Manufacture) is the wrong, but still common term for a final version of the operating system.

This means that from June we will only receive updates in the beta and release preview channel and even the "experimental" users
can also update to Windows 11 22H2 without being insiders and will then only receive updates.
Until then, we will continue to receive new Insider Builds with fixes and individual improvements to the new features.

With the Windows 11 22H2 and now already in the Insider, the task manager has been revised.
We've reported about it here before. Microsoft has shown that the task manager is linked to the colors set by the system.

As a result, the individual detail areas will also appear with the color that you have set under Settings -> Personalization -> Color.
It's probably just a small visual change. But for some it may be important.
In any case, the team responsible for the task manager has now linked it to the system.

Windows 11 22H2 (Sun Valley 2) has been completed.
This makes Windows 11 22621 the official final version ("RTM").
From now on there will only be updates and the 22621.1 is the "original version", as we always call it.

This means that the Windows 11 22H2 is ready, but not yet distributed.
It is currently still in the beta channel, but will be coming to the Release Preview channel a little later.
If you are curious, you can switch now or leave the beta channel.
However, Microsoft will not announce the official release until summer
and only then will everyone else receive Windows 11 22H2 in waves via Windows Update.

File Explorer is also introducing a refreshed layout of the left navigation pane which makes it easy for you to navigate to folders that matter to you.
The updated organization provides easy access to your pinned and frequently used folders (Quick access) and your OneDrive cloud profiles added to Windows.
OneDrive cloud profiles reflect the user’s name associated with the account.
Known Windows folders which are available by default in the navigation pane are no longer displayed under This PC to keep that view focused for your PC’s drives.
When you navigate to folders syncing to OneDrive such as Documents, Pictures, etc.,
the address bar displays the correct path to help bring clarity when your folders are on the cloud vs when they are local to you.

[We are beginning to roll this feature out, so it isn’t available to all Insiders in the Dev Channel just yet
as we plan to monitor feedback and see how it lands before pushing it out to everyone.]

Windows 11 22H2 Enterprise Eval ISO can be tested
In short: Microsoft has now provided the new Enterprise as an evaluation ISO for Windows 11 22H2 (22621).
This is fully operational for 90 days and can be extensively tested during this time.
If you are looking for a "normal" ISO, then have a look here.
As we have already reported, Windows 11 22H2 22621.382 will be released as the "final" version (GA) if nothing serious should happen.
And also the Enterprise Evaluation is the 22621.382.220806-0833.ni_release. That should confirm it.
This ISO is only suitable for a test.

Windows 11 22H2 OS Build 22621.382 is the „Final“ Version


Windows 11 22H2 has been ready for some time and only receives updates.
The official rollout is still missing. What we do know so far is that Microsoft won't be packing all of the new features into the 22621.
These will be submitted later through the moment updates.

We are currently using the 22622 in the beta channel. At the time, Microsoft said these versions would stay for a few weeks. However, a timeframe has not yet been set.
Those who use the Windows 11 22H2 22622 in the beta channel are effectively already on the move with the Moments 1, which should then be released in October as 228xx.

Internally, Microsoft is already working on the 2nd update.
This "package" should appear next year as 229xx. Both "moment" updates will then be provided as a small update (enablement package).
We already know it from Windows 10 2004 19041/2/3/4 and 19045.

So in summary:
Windows 11 22H2 22621 is the final version, which will appear as 22621.382 as General Availability (GA). Here still without tabs
In October, the Windows 11 228xx will be released as a moment 1 update. Then with the tabs in File Explorer.
If you are traveling with the 22622, you are already working with the "Preview". Because the small update KB5015669 has already been integrated here.

Until now, the official start of 09/20/22 was still speculative.
But it looks like the date will stick, because Microsoft has already pushed the Windows 11 22H2 to the servers as an ISO.
So far we only had the ISO with "Insider" in the name of Microsoft.

But that didn't matter. Because this addition could previously be ignored.
Because even the hardware manufacturers have already delivered devices with the Windows 11 22H2.
A few days ago we received a request on Facebook to ask if that was correct. There it was the 22621.382 that was installed.
Certainly updated by security update KB5016632 in August.
Or delivered as it was declared as GA.
We are currently at 22621.521 with the September security update.

The ISOs for an in-place upgrade (21H2 to 22H2) or a new installation are already on the Microsoft servers.

We are also about to change the Windows 11 22H2 Beta. The 22622 is currently being tested there.
So far described as a craft version, this will be the first update (Moment 1). This should be close to the end of the development.
It should be distributed later this year. Then we continue with a new Enablement Package (KB5018863) with Windows 11 22H2 22623. This should be released next year.

So it looks like the 228xx and 229xx as described here were just internal designations.

Microsoft then continues here as we know it from Windows 10, with the small update as an enablement package

KB5015669 Feature update to Windows 11 22H2 (22622)
Microsoft will also use a feature update (enablement package) under Windows 11 to unlock new functions in Windows 11 22H2.
KB5015669 is responsible for this and changes the version number from Windows 11 22H2 22621 to Windows 11 22H2 22622.

The prerequisite is an installed Windows 11 22H2 22621.290 or higher.
After that, the enablement package can be installed and you are on the road with Windows 11 22H2 22622.
So you don't need a new installation or an in-place upgrade, like from Windows 11 22000 to 22621.

Activate Windows 11 22H2 (22622) through the KB5015669
The enablement package unlocks new functions that are already included in the 22621 but are still blocked.
In this version, this includes the tabs in File Explorer.

The updates are then, as already known under Windows 10, identical and the same for both versions.
The version numbers then differ only by the 1 or 2 in the 2262x.

The KB5015669 can also be uninstalled.
Then you are back on the road with Windows 11 22621.
