As the name suggests, AttrMenu is a small extension for Windows explorer to quickly change the file or folder attributes without opening the file/folder’s properties box. In simple words, AttrMenu lets you change file and folder attributes right from the context menu (right-click menu).

Once installed, you can see the following entries in the file/folder context menu:

# Toggle Hidden attribute

Read-only attribute: You can use this feature to set a file or folder to read-only to prevent others from modifying it. Note that when you set read-only attribute to a folder only files in that particular folder will be set read-only. Also note that read-only files can be deleted, copied, moved and renamed.

Hidden attribute: As we know, this attribute lets you quickly hide/show folder in Windows. If the option “Don’t show hidden files and folders” is enabled, the hidden file will not be shown in the explorer and desktop. You can read our how to hide/show file/folder in Windows 7 guide to know more about attribute.

Archive attribute: Even though this option is not useful for most of us, you might want to know about this attribute. This attribute is set to a file whenever the file is modified. This helps some apps especially Windows backup software to quickly identify the files to be backed up. And once the backup is done, the backup program clears the archive attribute.

System attribute: Windows sets this attribute to a file/folder if the file/folder is essential for the proper functioning of the operating system. If you think a file or folder is crucial for your Windows, you can set the file or folder attribute to system.
