Restore Missing New “Folder” to the Desktop Right-Click menu
When you right-click an empty area on the desktop, the “New” menu that appears may not contain the “Folder” entry. Also, when attempting to create a folder by clicking the “New Folder” toolbar button in a folder or by pressing the Ctrl + Shift + N keys, nothing may happen.
You cannot create a new folder if the “Folder” registry entries are missing. This post explains how to fix the problem.
Restore New “Folder” option to the right-click menu
You can restore the “Folder” entry in the “New” menu using the following procedure:
- Start the Registry Editor (regedit.exe)
- Navigate to the following location:HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder
- In the right-pane, double-click (default) and set its data to Folder
- Exit the Registry Editor.
- Log off and log back in.
You should now be able to create new folders via the right-click menu, Ctrl + Shift + N keystroke, or via File Explorer ribbon.
