Star Thumbnail Generator for Windows 11

    Thumbnail Generator for Windows 11
This application aims to recreate the missing feature of folder thumbnails in Windows 11.
It uses ImageMagick to composite media thumbnails in a folder to create a thumbnail
and generates a desktop.ini file to set it as the thumbnail.

    Usage

    The usage is simple.

    1. Download the application from the [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] page
    2. Start up Thumbnail Generator.exe
    3. Choose a directory
    4. Choose whether to generate thumbnails recursively
    5. (If checked, the application will create thumbnail icons for subfolders as well.)
    6. Press start and wait.

The application will automatically generate thumbnails and place them in correct directories.

    Thumbnails not updating

If thumbnails are not updating, it is most likely the thumbnail cache not being properly updated.
Therefore, you need to reset the thumbnail cache.
To do this, you have to open up the Disk Cleanup utility, check the box for Thumbnails, and start cleaning.
This will effectively delete all folder icon cache, so they will be forced to be updated.

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]Folders containing special characters

The desktop.ini file by default, is always made in the native language encoding that your Windows is in.
However, when we are manually writing the desktop.ini file, the encoding is by default, UTF-8.
Therefore, your system needs to support UTF-8.
To enable the UTF-8 support, open Settings > Time & Language > Language & Region > Administrative language settings,
Open the Administrative tab, click on change system locale, and check the box that reads `Beta: Use Unicode UTF-8 for worldwide language support.
After restarting the PC, generate the thumbnails again, and the thumbnails should work.

How to restore the previous look - remove the desktop.ini file?
I installed a different system and icons by 7tsp and it shows me changed folders from win11.
These folders are on a different drive.

hello and this is if you upgrade your Windows
for example if you are using Upgrade not a Clean Install from Windows 10 10.0.19044 to Windows 11 10.0.22449
and you set (Keep data and folders)
after using 7tsp on Windows 11 7tsp created a new backup from this build
if you going back on Windows 10 you need to run sfc /scannow
this replace back all of your default system files from Windows 10 to default
run 7tsp as Administrator and click on Restore/Restore all modified system files to Windows default
    or run cmd.exe as Administrator
At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
    sfc /scannow

I did as you recommended, reverted from a copy of win11, and did as you recommended.
But that didn't help - the folders keep showing the thumbnails.

On a win 10 system, the sfc / scannow command fixes the system but does not fix icons

These icons are on a different drive.

These icons are on a different drive.

then you can try clear your Icon Cache manually
here is tutorial or you can use this little tool Reload Icons GUI
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

or you can Reset your folder Setting to default or disable thumbnails
