Newbie to web building, any tips or advice to give?

Hi, I hope this is a good place to ask about this, but I'm working on my own personal website (just because I want to, really. It's not meant to be professional or for a business) and there are still some things I'm trying to figure out. The biggest ones for me right now is acquiring an available domain name and hosting (I have used free hosts in the past such as Neocities as of recent, but I would like to move to self-hosting if I can).

I do know some static HTML and CSS, and that's primarily what I want my site to be in. I may be open to trying some good web dev tools too depending on what I do down the road. I may come back to this thread to ask questions about that too later on (if it's okay to do that)
